How the Water Leak & Bill Calculator Works
How the Leak Bill Estimate Is Calculated
The calculator turns a leak into gallons first. A known rate in gallons per minute is multiplied by 1,440 minutes a day. Drips are converted at the USGS figure of 15,140 drips per US gallon. Two meter readings taken a set number of minutes apart become a rate, with cubic feet converted at 7.48 gallons.
Those extra gallons are added on top of your normal monthly use. The water charge is the difference between the tiered bill with the leak and without it, so a leak that pushes you into a higher tier is priced at that higher rate. Base charges do not change, because a leak does not change them.
Sewer follows each city rule. Garland bills 98% of metered water, capped at the lesser of 17,000 gallons or 98% of your December through March average, with a 9,000 gallon cap for new accounts. Dallas bills actual use or the winter average, whichever is less. Other cities use rates you enter.
Leak Bill Worked Example
A steady 0.1 gallon per minute leak in Garland loses 144 gallons a day and 4,320 gallons in a 30 day cycle. With 5,000 gallons of normal use, those gallons land in the $7.26 tier and add about $31.36 in water. With a 6,000 gallon winter average, sewer billing stops at 5,880 gallons, so sewer adds only about $5.20. The total is about $36.57 for one bill.
The same leak under Dallas rates adds about $20.78 in water and $6.19 in sewer, about $26.97. A toilet or line losing 1 gallon a minute is a very different story: in Garland it adds about $434 in water alone in one month.
What Changes Your Leak Bill Estimate
- Leak size: gallons climb fast above a trickle, and water tiers price the top gallons highest.
- Your normal use: a household already near a tier boundary crosses it sooner.
- Winter average: a low Garland or Dallas winter average caps how much sewer a leak can add.
- Timing: a leak during December through March can raise next year’s sewer average, which the result flags but does not price.
- Rate changes: Garland and Dallas profiles use schedules effective October 1, 2025; check your current bill.

Leak Bill FAQs for Garland, TX Homeowners
How Much Water Does a Dripping Faucet Waste in a Month?
A faucet dripping 60 times a minute wastes about 5.7 gallons a day and about 171 gallons a month, using the USGS estimate of 15,140 drips per gallon. In Garland, Texas, that adds roughly $2 to a typical monthly water and sewer bill. A steady trickle of 0.1 gallon per minute wastes about 4,320 gallons a month.
Why Is My Garland Water Bill So High?
A high Garland water bill usually comes from more gallons used, often from a leak, a running toilet, irrigation or more people at home. Compare the gallons and billing days on the bill, not just the dollar total. Garland water tiers rise at 3,000 and 15,000 gallons, so extra use near those points costs more per gallon.
How Do I Check for a Water Leak Using My Meter?
To check for a leak with a water meter, turn off every faucet, appliance and irrigation zone, then write down the meter reading and the time. Wait 15 to 30 minutes without using water and read it again. If the number moved, water is flowing somewhere. Note the meter units, which may be gallons or cubic feet.
Does a Water Leak Raise My Garland Sewer Bill Too?
A water leak raises a Garland sewer bill only up to the cap. Garland bills sewer on 98% of metered water, limited to the lesser of 17,000 gallons or 98% of your December through March average. Once that cap is reached, extra leaked gallons add water charges but no more sewer charges for that bill.
